An Interview with the Author

Jocelyn Parrish interviews Vincent Gilvarry

The purpose of this interview is to give readers a glimpse into the mind of a novelist.

Vincent, the exciting news is that you have been advised by a marketing consultant that your novel, The Snake Charmer’s Wife has Hollywood potential. When do you expect it to hit the big screen?

Vincent:  Hopefully, sometime in the next five years, but it takes ages for a movie to get to stage one and someone has to decide to do it, so we will see. But even as I was writing this story, I imagined it as a movie.

Jocelyn: This is an intriguing story but it’s also a love story.

Vincent: Yes it is. It’s a double-bunger in fact, a story about two sets of star-crossed lovers, but there is so much more going on than that. For one thing, there’s the mystery of an undiscovered treasure. Then there’s the Snake Charmer’s diary and the Snake Charmer’s wife and one other thing as well which is equally as interesting, but if readers want to know what it is, they’ll have to check it out for themselves.

Jocelyn: You’ve been very productive over the last few years. How many books have you written so far?

Vincent: Over the last fifteen years I have written seven books altogether, five of which are a part of the on-going series called The Gods of Space and Time. There’s another story called, A Prayer for Brother William which is based on a situation that happened to one of my grand-aunts during World War 1. It’s a historical drama/love story set in early 20th century Australia and there is even a second book in the pipeline. Hopefully, there will also be a sequel to The Snake Charmer’s Wife as well.

Jocelyn: So, how would you categorize your stories?

Vincent: The God of Space and Time are epic adventures and should probably be classified as speculative fiction, mostly because they introduce a range of new ideas and concepts.

At one level they are love stories, but not in the sense of romantic love. The underlying premise is that love, acceptance, and friendship are important aspects of our lives and they’re crucial to our wellbeing. Sometimes it’s a juggling act but when something goes wrong, then we know about it immediately. It can be as simple as an unkind word, which as we all know can cause misery, heartache and pain and sometimes even worse things than that if it is not resolved or it’s allowed to go unchecked.

Jocelyn: So, who is your target audience?

Vincent: Originally it was Young Adult Readers but these stories are for anyone at all. If you like the idea of an engaging story with great dialogue and interesting characters and a plot with numerous twists and turns, then these could be for you.

Jocelyn: The first book in the series is called Thunder Boys.

Vincent: Yes, it’s about two young men who are under the impression that they’re going on a holiday, but everything that could go wrong does so. They’re accused of a crime they didn’t commit and have no choice but to do a runner, but to make matters worse, they’re pursued by an agent of the law.

Jocelyn: However, that isn’t all and it does have much more to offer.

Vincent: Of course, their experiences set the stage for what comes next and Addric and Dheago ends up in an alternate universe and it’s here they discover their true heritage.

Jocelyn: So, they’re more than what they seem.

Vincent: They are indeed. Addric and Dheago are Yumi Masters.

Jocelyn: So, we’re not talking wizards and vampires but something else altogether?

Vincent: Definitely something else because wizards and vampires have been done to death. Yumi Masters are members of an elite group of people whose job is to be peacekeepers of the universe…but they have to abide by very strict rules and if those rules are ever broken, that’s it…it’s all over.

Even though they have unlimited power, it’s only to be used in emergencies and I would like to point out that it is not magic and there are no wands to be seen. Wands are not necessary for reasons which the reader will discover; nevertheless, a lot of engaging and unusual stuff happens in every story in the series.

Jocelyn: Addric and Dheago start out as regular boys but they’re transformed by their experiences.

Vincent: Yes, there’s another power operating behind the scenes and in The Ocean of Infinite Mystery they discover exactly what that is. That idea, like just about everything else in these stories, evolved out of the writing process but it allowed me to add yet another dimension to the plot line.

In the first and second book, Addric and Dheago have a chance to use the powers of a Yumi Master but in the third book they are offered the opportunity to become Yumi Masters and as a result, their status changes. However, as I said, they can’t do whatever they want because there are rules which must be obeyed.

Jocelyn: In Part Two of Thunder Boys, Addric and Dheago discover that their world is facing a major but they also encounter one of the many women in the story.

Vincent: This series has a cast of extraordinary women, all of whom play a significant part in their lives. The Yumi Master, Lezula, for example, is one of those as is the Goddess Emphora, Dheago’s girlfriend, Elisabeth, a young woman called Saphera, a feisty little nature spirit called Eenah, and a crusader for truth and justice, the equally feisty, Lady Felicity Originalis and her lovely sister, the Countess Demetra.

Jocelyn: I was surprised to see that you chose to make the two main characters teenage boys. Why was that?

Vincent: I didn’t plan it like that at all, it just happened, as did the story, which sort of wrote itself to some degree. The trigger for the first story was a word I encountered while perusing the Thesaurus on my word processor and after that the idea just evolved. You could say that it literally came out of the blue.

Jocelyn: Most authors work to a plan, don’t they?

Vincent: They do, but in my case, it isn’t necessary. I usually wake up at three o’clock every morning and know exactly what I have to do next.

Jocelyn: That’s very interesting and to some degree it explains the freshness of your style, but you were about to describe your two main characters.

Vincent: Addric and Dheago are not heroes at all, they’re like chalk and cheese and they don’t always see eye to eye, but there is a lot more going on than you first realise.

Jocelyn: And they rise to the challenge?

Vincent:  Yes and in unexpected ways. If they are to survive, they have no choice but to get their act together. They venture into unexplored territory and find themselves in one dicey situation after another and in the process they learn to be both daring and resourceful.

Jocelyn: Addric is the driving force behind this duo.

Vincent: Addric starts out as the sort of annoying kid that drives everyone nuts, especially Dheago, but he has a few hidden talents and he’s the star of the show. They’re opposites in every way and unlike Dheago who is short-tempered and sometimes volatile, Addric is open-minded and accepting. He evolves and matures with every story because he isn’t afraid to tackle some of the trickier things that come his way. The fact that they’re opposites is fodder for the mill because it gives me as the author an opportunity to create yet another level of tension.

Jocelyn: So, it sounds quite complex but would these stories appeal to readers?

Vincent: I believe they would because they’re written in an easy to read style and they’re riddled with as much humour as I could squeeze in. As stories, they have one primary plot and numerous twists and turns, engaging dialogue, a range of wonderful supporting characters, a cast of thousands in some situations. A few but not all are immortals, most are human and several others are interesting creations of uncertain origins.

Jocelyn: Other than Thunder Boys, there are four other books in the series.

Vincent: Yes, the first two novels are set in Vela-Rishan, a galaxy on the outer perimeter of Alpha Centauri, whereas the next three are set here on Planet Earth.

In The Ocean of Infinite Mystery, Addric and Dheago discover even more about their unique heritage. In the third book in the series, The Last Days of Lemuria they end up in the long lost civilisation of Lemuria, but it’s for a reason as they eventually find out.

At one level, The Curse of the Golden Phoenix is a love story, but it is also a race against time to save the life of Dheago’s girlfriend, Elisabeth.

In Instant Karma, Addric gets an opportunity to show his true colours. The people of Earth have traded their souls in exchange for electronic devices and it’s his task to drag them back from the brink of destruction, and if he can’t do so within a period of ninety days, then that’s it. Sayonara, Planet Earth.

Jocelyn: The series has had several titles but that has now changed.

Vincent: Yes, I tried out numerous titles over the years but they never felt right. The series was originally called The Memoirs of a Yumi Master because they are Addric’s stories. The entire series has now had a major makeover, with a new series title, new book titles and new covers and it is now called The Gods of Space and Time. Over the years, Thunder Boys has had at least seven different titles but its new name is explained with a touch of humour in Chapter 102.

Jocelyn: These stories are primarily a product of your imagination, aren’t they?

Vincent: They definitely are and once I start writing, the story takes over and shows me where it wants to go. Liberating the secrets of your imagination and bringing them to life is a form of magic, as is any creative activity.

Jocelyn: So do you recommend that we read the books before we see the movie?

Vincent: There is plenty of time for that. Hopefully, these stories will draw the reader in from the start and then they’ll discover things they never knew. Thunder Boys is a bit of a rollercoaster ride in places, but underlying everything else is the relationship between Addric and Dheago.

Jocelyn: I have had the opportunity to read these books and I laughed and cried and fell in love with your characters and I really was transported to a whole new dimension. However, tissues are essential, as is an open mind and a willingness to move into totally new territory in every way.

Vincent: That’s true, but if you want to find out more, check out the page called Sample Chapters on my new website, The Portal Bookshop. It showcases a selection of interesting episodes and incidents and even though they’re not crucial to the storyline, they are designed to be a bit fun. They’re more like tangents or insights into the lives of the characters.

Jocelyn: Thank you for your time, Vincent, and I wish you all the best for the future.

And many thanks to Jean-Luc Bozzoli for allowing me to share his brilliant artwork

About vgilvarry

My first love was art, a career I pursued for a long time until the well dried up. After that, I headed off in a very different direction when I discovered writing. I have always been a freewheeling agent when it comes to creativity and when I get an idea in my head which is usually three o’clock in the morning, I just peck away at it just to see what will happen. After a while, the magic kicks in and the story tells me where it wants to go.
